Want Election Success? Act!

The most important thing that we can do right now to protect our community, our environment and our values is to work now for Democratic electoral success in local, state and federal offices in 2017 and in 2018.

As many of us experienced during the November election, phone banking is much less effective than in past years. Door to door canvassing starting NOW is critical for both the 2017 and the 2018 elections. Neighbor to neighbor contact is something that money can’t buy. Many voters skip non-Presidential year elections — every voter that we speak with is many, many more times like to turn out to vote blue in November 2017 and November 2018.

According to our friends at NY19votes, our district has over 100,000 voters who aren’t registered as well as approximately 100,000 voters who did not turn out in the 2016 election. In both Dutchess and Columbia counties, voters narrowly chose Clinton over Trump in November 2016; similarly, in the February Rhinebeck and Red Hook elections in voters narrowly elected Democrats and Democratic line candidates to village boards.

First-time canvasser Karen Holloway, from Indivislble LaGrange NY19, found that “most people by and large are not resentful of us; rather, they are friendly and engaging. Mind, the walk sheets have Democratic party registrants and those who have not declared a party. I found Democratic voters eager to sign, and non-declarers by and large OK with furthering the democratic process.” Read the rest of her tale of first-time canvassing here.

So join Hudson Valley Strong this Sunday as we go door to door to register and engage fellow NY19 voters, hear what issues they care about, and remind them that voting in the November 2017 local elections is key to turning our communities blue.
